Conservatory Theatre

The building serves as a backdrop to Passeig de Pere III, marking the final point of the first stretch, which completes the ensemble of affluent buildings and complementary facilities of the Manresa bourgeoisie. Located in the Old Quarter, with its façade close to Muralla del Carme, in an area of great civic activity and in a highly prominent and strategic position.

Typology/Elements

Public building of monumental character, isolated and composed of the theater body, remains of the former Dominican convent, and other municipal facilities. It is a major work in which the theater element stands out, with its hall occupying the cloister courtyard of the former convent, plus an elongated wing with a façade onto Jaume I Street, which houses the Municipal Music Conservatory and other municipal facilities. This wing has a ground floor and an upper floor. The façade facing Muralla del Carme Street is Neoclassical in style, with a predominance of solid over void. Centered access with three arched windows on the upper floor and a triangular pediment set back.

The other façades are of little interest. The interior of the theater reflects the Italian typology, with a stalls area and four tiers of boxes. Around it, two wings of the convent cloister from the 18th century are preserved, with groin vaults and pillars with carved capitals, in a classical style. Another entrance is through a vestibule parallel to Mestre Blanc Street, where the Music Conservatory can also be accessed. The construction system consists of load-bearing walls and a roof formed by timber trusses. It is also worth highlighting, as decorative elements, the classical capitals of the cloister and the ensemble of the theater's original decoration.

Originally this space was a Gothic church of the Preachers (1321); Convent of the Dominicans (1684-1740-1835) and it is currently used as a theater.
