Kursaal

The development of this first section of the Passeig, in the last third of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, includes the most significant architectural interventions, from a formal and representative point of view, both in the bourgeois residences and in the facilities linked to the prosperous spirit of this area, perfectly represented by the Kursaal theater.

Typology/Elements

Public building, between party walls, with the main façade opening onto an atrium and the rear aligned with Carrer de Carrió. The construction consists of a ground floor and four upper floors with a unified and symmetrical composition. The main façade has a classical composition, set back from the line of the Passeig, creating a courtyard with single-story side porches supported by paired columns with Ionic capitals. Above them are railings with balustrades. The very flat rear façade features a row of windows at the level of the top floor and a triangular pediment at the top. The entire structure reflects the Noucentisme movement of the period, in its monumental-classicist aspect. As decorative elements, the composition of the openings and the use of classical repertoire (capitals, pediments, columns, etc.) are noteworthy.
