Sant Josep Clinic

The building is located at the northeastern edge of the Escodines neighborhood, outside the oldest core and next to an area built during the 1960s in the Sagrada Família neighborhood. Its immediate surroundings consist of early 20th-century working-class housing and are across from the Salesian convent, a senior residence run by the Little Sisters of the Poor, and a building for medical laboratories and patient residence. All of this is in relatively narrow streets. Noteworthy are the courtyards and interior parking spaces, which distance the clinic buildings from the rest of the block and allow the interior facades to be visible.

Typology/Elements

The Sant Josep clinic is made up of a group of buildings from different periods and styles, among which the main building and its exterior and interior facades stand out. Regarding the exterior facade on Caputxins Street, the rhythm of the openings is notable and consistent on the ground and first floors but changes on the second floor and the attic level. The ground floor openings have stone frames and voussoirs with bossed ashlar chains, the same material used for the plinth. The rest of the openings have no frames and all have lowered arches. The wall is plastered and painted, and the facing is brick. Between the second and attic floor is a white-colored cornice line.

The interior facade is in a post-war rationalist style and has been recently restored. It is comprised of ground floor plus four stories and features a semicircular central section as its main characteristic, next to a smaller structure that functions as a vertical circulation module. The wall is plastered and the floors are divided by prominent white-colored cornice lines. The windows are large and arranged in groups of three on the sides and one in the center. On the second and third floors there are exterior balconies along the staircase, and the attic floor is set back with the freed-up space used as a terrace.

Inside, a staircase with original materials and a characteristic square shape is preserved, with doors featuring large glass panes that are still used to access the rooms on the different floors.
