Col·legi-Asil of the Children (School of Arts and Crafts)

Modernist building constructed between 1898 – 1901 to replace an old orphanage founded in 1609. It has had various public uses: orphanage, girls' school, educational institute, and currently houses the municipal social services.

Located in the area closest to the town center, near the old quarter and facing Carretera de Vic, it becomes one of the most characteristic facades on this street.

Typology/Elements

It falls within historicist Modernism and seems to imitate a large building from the Romanesque era. The Neo-Romanesque style is also reflected in the blind arcades that crown the different facades and in the semicircular arched windows.

Rectangular floor plan building with two lateral wings and a larger central body corresponding to the central section of the facade which housed the stairway to the second floor. It has two floors in the central body and in one wing, and three in the left wing, the third floor leading to a roof terrace with access to other rooms. The main facade was 46 meters long, and the internal division of the two floors—very tall—can be seen through the windows. The cornice and outline of all openings are highlighted by using different materials. It has a rear courtyard with glass-filled facades that help illuminate the building.
