Hospital center
The building is located in a built-up area of terraced blocks situated between Poble Nou and Avinguda de les Bases de Manresa, which was developed in the second half of the 20th century. It is one of the last expansion areas to have been developed over the irrigated land of the Sèquia de Manresa. Its formation has been conditioned by the Manresa to Sallent and Súria railway line of the Catalan Railways and by the first buildings, such as the Municipal Slaughterhouse. In recent years, its urban development has continued, it has become better connected with the city center with the removal of the railway, and it has become the city's university campus.
Typology/Elements
Building for healthcare use between party walls, with basement and ground floor plus 7 upper floors, resolving a corner with a chamfer. It is a concrete-structure building, exposed on the ground floor and in certain interior areas, which allows for a flexible interior layout and large glass surfaces on the façade, especially in the chamfered area, which corresponds to the vertical circulation module and the waiting rooms between the ward corridors. The side façades are of different heights to adapt to the type of street: ground floor plus 5 on Flor de Lis street and ground floor plus 7 on Bases de Manresa avenue.
The façade emphasizes the horizontal rhythm through the alignment of the openings. The wall treatment is made with artificial stone pieces, a material typical of the sixties and seventies that was produced by some companies in Manresa. The fifth floor has a recessed façade, which breaks the vertical rhythm and makes it possible to visually accommodate the difference in height between the two façades. The openings are glazed with aluminum joinery. The roofs are flat, including that of the interior part of the ground floor, which is lit by means of skylights.
