Typology/Elements
The original chapel was dedicated to Our Lady of the Good Death or of Mercy, and was inaugurated in 1856. It was a square-plan building, and it was built at the back of the Sant Maurici section, directly opposite the entrance. Following the Cemetery Secularization Law of 1932, its demolition was decided, which began on September 29, 1934, although due to the high cost it represented (about 20,000 pesetas) it dragged on for many years, until 1939.
The new chapel, inaugurated in February 1940, occupied the central part of the space that was used for the observation of corpses and autopsies and shared space with these services until a few years ago. It is a construction built in Egyptian style, very similar to the cemetery's exterior facade, with many orientalizing decorative details. The chapel would house the image of Our Lady of Sorrows, placed in February 1940. The blessing of the new chapel was made to coincide with that of the reconstruction of the New Bridge, which connected the city with the cemetery.
