Typology / Elements
The original chapel was dedicated to Our Lady of a Good Death or Mercy and was inaugurated in 1856. It was a square-shaped building located at the back of the Sant Maurici Section, directly opposite the entrance. Following the Secularization Law of Cemeteries in 1932, its demolition was ordered, which started on September 29, 1934. However, due to the high cost involved (around 20,000 pesetas), it took many years and wasn’t completed until 1939.
The new chapel, inaugurated in February 1940, occupied the central area of the space used for corpse observation and autopsies and shared space with these services until a few years ago. It is a structure built in Egyptian style, very similar to the exterior facade of the cemetery, with many oriental decorative details. The chapel featured the image of Our Lady of Sorrows, placed in February 1940. The blessing of the new chapel coincided with that of the reconstruction of the Pont Nou, which connected the city with the cemetery.
