House of Charity
Building in neoclassicist style, 19th century (1857-59), located in the northeast of the old town, in the Rermei district, facing Plaça Cots. In the middle of the square stands this remarkable facility as a key element that structures much of the district.
Typology/Elements
Detached building, surrounded by a garden and located in the city center, in the area of the 19th-century expansion. It has a monumental character, considerable proportions, and a classicizing style. The building's structural system is based on load-bearing walls and slabs. The roof is made of ceramic vaulting and laminated steel joists. The load-bearing walls are built with 50 cm thick stone blocks. The main facade features a slightly higher central body than the rest and a tower at each end of the facade. The decoration is in neoclassical style. The main body has a semicircular arched doorway, flanked by attached columns with Ionic capitals; the body is topped by a triangular pediment. The bell tower is a gable bell cote. The rest of the facade is also very classical and regular.
The renovation work of the nineties has led to a radical change in the rear facade, which in some sections has been replaced by a glass wall.
