At the beginning of the 20th century (1906/1908), an industrial Modernist-style slaughterhouse was built in which hygiene in the process of slaughtering the animals that would later be marketed would be controlled and ensured. After years of activity, the slaughterhouse became obsolete. Today, after being renovated, it houses the university library of the Manresa Campus.
Typology/Elements
The building complex is made up of a series of pavilions that occupy an area of one hectare. The monumental entrance to the complex is found along Juncadella Road (which leads to the square); on both sides of the gate there are two ground-floor pavilions that open onto a courtyard that facilitates access to the other buildings (3 naves or pavilions with specific activities).
Ornamentally, the two pinnacles with vegetal motifs and the modernist-style coat of arms of Manresa stand out, as do the decorative details of bull heads (a sign of the activity that was originally carried out) found at the entrance to the complex. On the exterior of one of the two pavilions, which currently houses the university library, we can also find a beautiful modernist stone frieze that indicates the year the slaughterhouse was completed.
