Balcells Factory
Academic industrial architecture building built at the end of the 19th century (1890) and rebuilt in the years 1997-2000 / 2000-2002. It currently houses the Municipal Music Conservatory, but in its origins it was used as a factory.
The building is located in Plaça Montserrat, next to the church and the new courts.
Typology/Elements
Industrial building in a neoclassical style with English influence ("floor factory"), characterized by a clear square floor plan with cast-iron pillars and a vertical access tower. Its structure stands out for the regular repetition of large windows decorated with brickwork that prioritize natural lighting, with stone and plastered walls. Despite the consolidation and acoustic insulation renovations of the 1990s to adapt it to new uses, it preserves the original aesthetic of beams and iron columns, serving as an example of urban and energy efficiency that has gained monumental presence with the opening up of the surrounding area.
